Twelfth edition of Australian Charities Report released

The Australian Charities Report provides a comprehensive annual analysis of information submitted by registered charities in annual information statements.

Now in its 12th edition, the report offers important insights into the size, structure, activities, and financial positions of Australia’s charity sector.

It examines key trends in revenue, expenses, assets, liabilities, employment, volunteering, and the people and communities supported by charities.

Key findings were:

  • Cost-of-living pressures are taking a toll on charities and the communities they serve
  • Charities generated $239 billion in revenue — a 7.5 per cent increase that outpaced growth in the wider economy
  • Expenses rose by 8.6 per cent to $231 billion, outpacing revenue growth
  • Charities employed 1.6 million staff, or 11 per cent of Australia’s workforce, a rise from 10.7 per cent, and
  • Registered charities reported that they engaged 3.9 million volunteers — the highest registered-charity volunteer count ever reported.

The report also highlights changes across different charity sizes, purposes, and locations. By presenting sector-wide data and emerging trends, it provides a valuable resource for charities, policymakers, regulators, researchers, and the broader community in understanding the sector’s scale, diversity, and contribution.
